Sam Kerr
Sam Kerr is the captain of the Australia women’s national soccer team – the Matildas – and a leading goal scorer for Chelsea in the English FA Women’s Super League. Bursting onto the W-League scene as a 15-year-old with Perth Glory, Sam won goal of the year in her debut season. At the age of 20 she moved to the US, where she signed with WNY Flash, and later the Sky Blues. When she returned to Australia and laced back up her boots with Perth Glory as their captain, she led them to a second-place finish in the 2016–17 season.
Sam has been a member of the Matildas since she was just 15 years old. In 2016 she played for the Matildas at the Olympics in Brazil, and she was the top goal scorer in the 2017 Tournament of Nations. In 2019 Sam was named captain of the Matildas, and in that same year she made her big move to the UK to join Chelsea, where she established herself as a leading goal scorer and assistant for Chelsea and the league during the 2020–21 FA WSL season and has positioned herself as one of the best female strikers in the world.
Sam has been awarded the Julie Dolan Medal as the best player in the W-League in 2017; Women’s Health Sportswoman of the Year in 2017; Asian Football Confederation Women’s Player of the Year in 2017; Young Australian of the Year for 2018; NWSL Most Valuable Player in 2017 and 2019; the NWSL Golden Boot in 2017, 2018 and 2019; the ESPY Best International Women’s Soccer Player in 2018 and 2019; and was voted as one of the 100 Best Female Footballers in the World in 2019. In 2021, Sam made for an even more memorable Olympic campaign, becoming the highest Australian women's international goal-scorer.
